Iʻm lucky my kids allow me some creative input. This is Sha-Leiʻs senior prom bouquet…probably the last bouquet Iʻll make for her until she gets married…..I call it:

The only people who have heard this new recording besides Iolani, Chaz and Sha-Lei are my brother Rhett and well, my producer Dave Tucciarone. I guess it is like a secret.

”`Ā” means to sparkle, like a gem. Iʻm not gonna lie…I love the bling. It makes me sing! Thatʻs not why I named this project “`Ā”. For my first recording endeavor, I wanted a name that would catch a few eyes and turn a few heads, hoping to lure a few ears. “`Ē” encompassed all of my feelings and emotions and so it was destiny. It truly was strange, weird and wonderful to say the least.

Of course people asked if Iʻd go through the entire vowels and originally I said no. Then began the process of gathering songs and ideas for project number two and I found myself floundering, trying to find myself amidst the expectations of my own expectations. And so “`Ī” was born. The title exhibits power and glory and yet what i was trying to say was that this was my best just for right now. And it was.

I knew once I went there with the second vowel, it was gonna be tough to not do a third. (I promise though, this is the last in the one letter title series.) Manu Boyd actually suggested `ā and I immediately fell for it. To sparkle…who wouldnʻt love it? I have to admit, that like a diamond this project was in the rough. The original rock looked nothing special. But with the help of so many incredibly talented people each adding their own faceting, itʻs ready to hit the lights. There will be many other bobbles in the jewelry case. I hope this one will catch your eyes, turn your head and once more…lure your ears.

`Ā -- to sparkle like a gem......

We are each born with special gifts. May I compare them to rocks? When first discovered, they are rough, dirty and dull. We try wiping them on our sleeve hoping to expose a precious stone but it discloses no immediate beauty. Often times, we just add it to a collection of long forgotten treasures we’ve found on other adventures. But, if we take the time to clean and buff it smooth, it begins to reveal it’s inner grandeur. Every stone has inclusions, tiny imperfections within, but a steady, patient hand can carve around these creating magnificence. Every cut creates a facet, a table for light to dance upon. And when the artist’s job is complete, it is a dazzling sight. The once seemingly worthless rock is now a spectacular gem. —-Natalie Ai Kamauu

I love opportunities that test my abilities…singing with a band this size was intimidating! In the end it was amazing to say the very least. Mahalo to Daryl Agena for allowing me to participate.

I heard You at the Congress in Honolulu this Monday and I was so so amazed by Your beautiful voice! I bought a CD and am now at home in Denmark listening to it! It will be a present for my mother and her twin sister, who are also singing and play guitar, they will be so so surprised and moved by your music, I know! Thank You for this wonderful performance, I am very greatful to have heard You sing and I will let others now about You!

Thank You!

In the scheme of things....

I havenʻt checked in for a while. Lifeʻs been crazy busy although thatʻs not the best of excuses. I thought Iʻd take some time to play catch up….

I spent much of my December in Japan and had the opportunity to visit Okinawa as well, but Christmas wouldnʻt be Christmas without Halau Hula Olanaʻs annual Christmas concert. Entitled “All That Jazz”…it certainly was and then some!

The New Year found us back in studio with producer Dave Tucciarone recording not just my #3 CD “`Ā”, but also adding vocals on my dadʻs second album as well. His is pau, mine isnʻt. Iʻm hoping to release in September, marking Iolani and my 20th wedding anniversary. Iʻd be nothing without him for sure.

Since the beginning of the year, Iʻve been to Japan three times and am supposed to return in two weeks. Iʻm hoping by then that the problems with the nuclear power plants will be resolved, otherwise itʻll be a difficult decision to return.

In May, we begin recording CD #4 in Japan with an orchestra. Iʻm thrilled, scared, excited….kinda reminds me of how I felt when I was recording “`Ē“….weird, strange, different. Iʻm hoping as always that I come away from this experience being a better and stronger person, performer and friend.

Last week, after my performance on ʻPakele Live: Kokua Japanʻ, I was approached by the owners of Koaloha `Ukulele. They offered to make me my “dream `ukulele”… what a thrill. Iʻll meet with them next week to talk story. Can you say bling?

I also became the mommy of a new puppy…number two for us. Sheʻs a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. We didnʻt realize when we bought her that she was sick, but weʻve nursed her back to health and she is thriving. We were told by her veterinarian that we probably saved her life. “Chestnut” has brought us much joy in the two months that we have had her.

With all that has happened in Japan and with our connection to the people there, I look forward to giving of my time to help. Tomorrow night at Pearl is a benefit Iʻll be singing for, “Hope for Japan”. Let us remember how blessed we are and give what we can to those who are in need. I always find that when I give, I am always blessed in return.

May you always have good, hard work, the health and strength to do it and someone to do it for…..Natalie

make your reservations early!!

make your reservations early!!

…Keiki Ho`olaule`a at Pearl Ridge……my favorite...

…Keiki Ho`olaule`a at Pearl Ridge……my favorite hālau performed for us….HĀLAU HULA OLANA….

…..beautiful write up in the Sunday...

…..beautiful write up in the Sunday Star-Advertiser…….

The 2010 Aloha Festivals Royal Court

The 2010 Aloha Festivals Royal Court

MEETING WITH GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE….Aloha Week 2010 Royal...

MEETING WITH GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE….Aloha Week 2010 Royal Court, Pa`u Queen and Aloha Festivals Board Members.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALOHA WEEK HISTORY: an entire family represents our ali`i

THIS YEARʻS ALOHA WEEK FESTIVALS ROYAL COURT:
